We build sturdy frames — often cedar or similar — filled with a mix suited to food gardens. Layout leaves room to walk and work. Where deer pressure is high, we plan fencing or netting so tomatoes are not a midnight snack.

Add drip irrigation and you have a productive patch that fits a tough climate without fighting the ground underfoot.
