Classic architectural cycad with stiff, feather-like fronds and a shaggy trunk. Slow-growing Texas Tough accent for containers or protected beds; keep away from pets — seeds and foliage are toxic.
Landscape use
Formal accent and architectural specimen in protected beds, entry courts, and containers. Works as a focal point in rock-mulched or formal Hill Country compositions when drainage is excellent. Prefer sheltered microclimates away from open north winds; in colder Central Texas pockets, containers that can move to cover are safer than exposed in-ground plantings. Pair with low evergreen groundcovers or gravel so the stiff frond silhouette stays clean and readable.
Care
Needs sharp drainage and full sun to part shade; slow-growing once established and intolerant of soggy soil. Water deeply but infrequently; ease off in winter. Protect from hard freezes — foliage browns near 20°F and plants can be lost around 15°F, so cover or move containers when Arctic fronts threaten. Keep seeds and fronds away from dogs and cats: all parts (especially seeds) are toxic if chewed or ingested. Wear gloves when pruning; leaflets are stiff and sharp.
